  • date of parents’ marriage or civil partnership

  • mother’s maiden surname

There are 2 types of birth certificate:

  • the short version, which contains only the baby’s details
  • the full version, which also contains the parents’ details.

Once notified, your Embassy or consulate start working the application process. A consular report of birth Abroad will be granted for your children. You can apply for passport for your child after it. You do not need Consular Report Birth Abroad (CRBA) passport verification, but at the time of returning to US you may need it. Once you have contacted the office responsible for issuing vital records for the facility and location that your child was born and it is submitted to your US Embassy or consulate, you will fill out a form FS-240. Once that is approved the document you will be provided with is a CRBA.  This certificate will be your child’s official record for the claim of   citizenship.

What is Certificate of Birth

Birth registration is the process by which a child’s birth is recorded in the civil register by the government authority. It provides the first legal recognition of the child and is generally required for the child to obtain a birth certificate and as a result any other legal documents and rights.

It is important that the registered child receive a birth certificate, since it is this that provides permanent, official and visible evidence of a state’s legal recognition of his or her existence as a member of society. Birth registration enables a child to receive medical treatment, go to school, inherit property, prevent child exploitation and find legal work. All these rely on birth registration to prove identity and thus entitlement to basic rights. Children whose births are unregistered and do not have a birth certificate, may not be able to claim the services and protections due to them.
