Certificate of exemption is a document that gives a person or company official permission not to do something or not to pay something. If you want to establish a new business in a new area, you required to register to collect sales taxes at the time of selling objects. For the certificate of exemption you need to maintain a substantial physical presence. After it you are eligible to collect sale taxes from your consumers. The purchaser must complete all fields on the exemption certificate and provide the fully completed certificate to the seller in order to claim exemption.

A certificate of exemption sample may be issued for a single purchase or as a blanket certificate if you are regular customer of a shop, you may provide a blanket certificate. You do not need to provide an exemption for the purchase that would be done in future, if you claim exemption for the same reason. The seller is required to maintain proper records of exempt transactions and may need to provide those records, including a copy of this exemption certificate, to member states of the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement.

The reason for exemption must be identified on the exemption certificate along with the required permit number or other identifying information. The following explains the various reasons that may be used for an exemption and the documentation required for each reason

  • Agricultural Exemption

  • Direct mail

The expire date of the certificate depends on it’s type. It is more common for expiration dates on exempt organization exemption certificates but between all the states. Independent of the state there are some criteria that has to be present in the certificate of exemption. These are

  • The type of exemption being claimed.
  • The names and addresses of both the purchaser and seller involved in the transaction.
  • A description of the goods being purchased.
  • The purchaser’s tax registration number or business license.
  • A statement that if the purchaser uses the items in a taxable manner that they will be responsible for the use tax.
  • A signature of the purchaser and the date signed.

Some countries also provide online services to enable sellers to resale their object.  In some states, machinery and equipment are also used in the manufacturing process. In this case, the manufacturer would issue an exemption certificate to their suppliers when they purchase qualifying items claiming the manufacturing exemption.
